There are two train services Circumvesuviana local trains which run year-round, and the less frequent air conditioned Campania Express tourist service (AprilOctober). Paestum is an atmospheric place to walk around and is usually a lot quieter than Pompeii or Herculaneum. There is no free parking in Positano, unless you are willing to leave your car a number of kilometers (and staircases) from the center of town. Most of the tours of Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento are full-day trips* which also include a visit to Pompeii. I've heard very mixed things and only caught a very brief glimpse on my way from Rome to Pompeii. Set off from Sorrento to discover the magic of the Amalfi Coast with a Positano tour. Many start operating after Easter or near the start of summer. Herculaneum tickets can be booked in advance online for a specific date for 13 adults (free for EU citizens under 18 or 3.50 for 1825s) or you can buy them at the entrances. However, Ive been to Cinque Terre during an Easter week and it was soooooooo crowded! But instead of the town being buried by the ash cloud, it was covered by a pyroclastic flow (a super-heated avalanche of gas and rock). This is definitely on my list! The arches in the Cathedral of Amalfi remind me of those is La Mezquita in Cordoba, Spain.

Looks like such a beautiful area. They were right on the beach with unrivaled views. There were also some group tours in vans for a little less but left later in the day and felt like they didnt give enough time for stops in the towns. This looks like a delightful day to a dream destination.

Love that part of Italy. Private tours are the best way to go but can get quite expensive especially for families. My kids werent leaving this area without getting their daily dose of gelato.
There were no colorful umbrellas or beach chairs in sight but we found some fishermen getting their boats ready. We looked at another private van tour but it started at 11 AM and didnt give us enough time to explore as we wanted. The was a whole scene of all the village people doing their everyday tasks along with many animals. Thanks for this very well written post. The surprisingly small Baroque interior was mostly made of white and gold and quite bright. Maybe thats a hint that I should visit there next. Looking for somewhere to stay in Sorrento? From the bus stop its a 20-minute walk up to the edge of the crater, with a path taking you right to the rim.
This cathedral was founded in the late 10th century originally as a Benedictine Abbey. Its hard to imagine this place even more photogenic once its surrounded by colorful blooms. We took our time walking down to the town center and shoreline.
The Herculaneum archaeological site is a lot smaller than Pompeii, but it was a richer town so its buildings are larger and more ornate, with mosaics, statues and frescoes. If youre visiting these two towns, try to head back to Sorrento from Amalfi where the SITA buses started. There is a full day private tour* to Ischia from Sorrento which includes the ferry and a guided car tour around the island, including Castello Aragonese and Monte Epomeo.
Though, most of them were still closed during our visit. If you are travelling by car or scooter, it's worth the effort to take a side trip up the cliffside to the village of Montepertuso and the hamlet of Nocelle. Those roads are curvy and looking down from the road can make anyone feel nervous. The fish and chips place was one of the other places that had long lines.
