So Ill just push this more down because I started removing it, make sure its nice and deep. Now place your dried flowers on the clay and arrange them till you are pleased with your design. And this is the plastic mold. Its funny the clay on the edge of the olives themselves is a different color. You can make an uneven natural art using clay as the mold itself.
So the plants, get the showcase. Let me think what I want. Cause thats really like two separate layers. 4. Ill try different flowers, different leaves and Ill cast them one after the other. So for this time Im gonna leave it plain green. I have my flower now, whats the next step? Now, moment of truth, lets see what happens with the rolling pin and the olives when I go over them. If you want to do really deep relief then you want the clay to be at least as thick as that. And then the tapping, the mold can get loose and then you dont want to have a mess of plaster all over your shoes. So if I pour my plaster in here, Im only gonna get one color result. After making 4 frames and 4 ornaments and a failed attempt, still have half of the box remaining. Its the same with cement other hardening substances, you dont want them into your pipes. If you make them really thin, theyre gonna be really fragile. I also like to flap the sides of the clay onto the frame sides for extra precaution. You can buy any type or any size frame to your preference. Again, you want work on wet plaster, so underwater in a sink or something to catch all the dust, and then you can refine the texture of the back, send it flat on the sandpaper like this and then the edges a little bit to make them a neater, but give it really nice detail. What helps is to use some kind of plank of wood or a piece of textile underneath. 5. Its a bit more gray when its wet. We can wait for the plastic to cure completely and then rinse that off. This one is about one volume water for two volumes of plaster and I also add a little bit of powdered pigment in to get my mix. So the front is not so interesting, but the back has a really beautiful texture. You can see changing color. So the little white plaster that I had made in my cup is not too hard. And then they stick to each other.
So these are standard little drinking plastic cups, and Ive cut them in half. And this would fit. This step removes any moisture from the flowers and makes them ready for use. So if its not flowing, if its not really liquid, just make yourself a new batch. Ill just push that down with my paintbrush to make it a bit neater. So thats the first one spread out. Make casting art ornaments and tiles for the wall using cookie cutters. And here the edge of the the mold is a bit angled. So Ill use the narcissus and Ill place it sort of in a way that makes sense with the boundaries of my circle that I planned and then were gonna flatten it. In this case, it would be nice to have an even smaller rolling pin actually. I bought a few supplies and had a few things on hand to complete the botanical casting art.
Be careful when you remove it and with soft hands place the frame, motif up and flat surface down on a paper towel. So you really want to make sure that the plaster never goes into the drain when its liquid. Use playdoh molds, handheld tools to freehand draw or even dry food items to make cool art for your home. If Im happy, Ill just push it down into the clay and you want a really good bond with a clay because soon enough were gonna pour the plaster into the mold, and then you need to tap it out so that the air bubbles also get released.
So you dont want clay that has a lot of little pieces of whats called chamotte (grog), little pieces of hard clay inside to give it stability, but in your case, you want it as smooth as possible. So if its a look preference, thats fine, but just be really careful when handling them, especially theyre still wet, just fresh plaster, because its gonna be much easier to break. So thats if I want to make a flower thats or a plaster relief thats all one color. So all the clay, thats a little bit contaminated with hard plaster, Ill put it aside and I wont be using it for this again. These ones are really stiff, really tough and the olives themselves are a little bit too mushy. Use a blade or knife to mark the borders of the frame to know your working space with flower print design. Use some weight on top like brick or heavy plates to press them. Get a bit of air underneath A good tool for this would be a piece of string or rope to push underneath the clay to lift it off. More info? So be prepared to sacrifice your flowers and only be able to do one casting per flower. And you dont want to leave plaster pieces in your clay if youre gonna reuse it because it will make it really hard to smooth it out without lumps.
So again, all the pieces of clay was plaster in it.
And its also a bit of a guessing game as to how much plaster you actually have to make, depending on how much volume you want to fill. 14. If you have really tiny stems, its probably gonna be really hard to fill in those tiny stems with your layer of white. Ill make sure they dont have to go back into the pile so they dont contaminate the rest. 2. You can place them on a piece of paper or cloth but really they dont give out any color or stain the surface. You dont have to invent anything beautiful like this nature does it for you.

So here Ill use a really small paintbrush and very diluted plaster. 10.
Its not always important to have it facing you. So we also use plaster of Paris to cast the whole piece, but in a different color.
And then these leaves, theyre gonna be a little bit in the way, so lets see if I can push them here maybe. You want to let the water absorb into all of your powder.
This is the same. Next day after letting the mold dry overnight, remove the dried flowers remnants using a brush and hang it in natural form or paint it. You want it to be quite soft and you want to make sure the texture is pretty fine. And theres a bit of olive juice in the clay but I dont think thats gonna matter so much. Its really just super delicate, touch it and then the plaster water just fuses on its own. And so if youre taking your time and you see that the plaster is getting really too thick and not flowing anymore, thats fine.
You can also use glue gun pad. It doesnt have to be specifically straight or even you just want it to be nice and smooth. And then with your finger just go on the edge Dig in a little bit. I intended to not let the clay air dry and become useless for more attempts. So that was the olive branch. So it doesnt dirty the background color. So when my plaster is nice and saturated, Ill just swirl it and thats when the gloves are also handy. Today I want to share with you how to make Bas-Relief botanical casting art using clay and Plaster of Paris. So you can also reuse it afterwards for other things. Its a layer of really thin clay that we can wash off in the end. Its too thick, so Ill make a new batch.

You can use black, gold or even color the plant to make it stand out against a background. So gloves and Ive done it many, many times. The color doesnt really matter.
Let it settle, youll see that its gonna become a hard layer at the bottom eventually or a sludge layer. Thats the chemistry of the plaster of Paris for you. So I just tap it in and I dont want to leave in mark into the fresh clay with my pen brush. This is actually pretty easy. 18. So break this part off. So it will make it really easy to pop it out. So it doesnt move so much when I come with my rolling pin and that Ill just flatten the whole thing so that the flower is embedded into the clay and doesnt stick out above the surface. I bought these small sized ones from dollar store as well. For this project heat them without pressing them flat. The technique of plant plaster relief has been around for a long time and is a great way of creating beautiful keepsakes of seasonal plants.
16. So first I try to make it as flat as possible by hand and using a rolling pin, you can try to make it a nice even slab so that we can cast all our flowers in it. Dont pay extraordinary for this product on Amazon. Maybe I want to try the big olive branch. I can also use these little cookie cutter forms, or if you want to go really small, you could use a cut-up paper roll or the rim of a little plastic cup.
So Ill check again with my mold.
And again, its coming loose really easily because of the unvarnished wood. So be a bit more generous than you think and then Ill add my plaster.

All right, lets see what happens when I peel it back out. And so the idea after youve poured your clay, is to shake the mold. 7. This is gonna be the size that I have, I need to roll that a little bit bigger, or I can use a smaller mold, thats also possible.
Start by placing the liner or kneading pad on your surface. And you want to think how its gonna fit in the shape of the mold like how, it will be arranged and you can cheat a little bit. So not a face mask, corona-style but a dust mask that actually stops dust particles.
I wanted to make dried plant art for my front door plant space and I find using dried flowers the best for this casting art project. With the help of rolling pin press the dried flowers into the clay. And the final one, the big one, so the bigger it is, the more careful you want to be with flipping it over and handling in general, especially if you dont have a really thick layer of plaster. And this one, I think Ill sacrifice, this one also. Ill just smooth it out last time before I get started. So that looks pretty good.
So before you start mixing the plaster, wear your mask, when you work with pigments, wear your mask. I also like to take out any excess of air from the airtight sealed plastic bags to ensure it is in as little air contact as possible. So to get started, were gonna use clay and you want a soft clay. Or you can use the same mold for more imprints.
For the one with the plaster contrast color, Ill use a different flower. So look for intriguing leaves or beautiful textures, beautiful thicknesses, beautiful nerves of the petals. The leaves turned out really beautiful. I do my powdered pigment in the water and again I do it by eye. This website uses cookies so that we can provide you with the best user experience possible. And so here Ill paint the inside of this little lower elements where all the leaves were with really small paintbrush and really dilute plaster of Paris. Your email address will not be published. And of course its plastic mold, you can reuse them many times so the plaster once its cured, once its hard, you remove it from the mold, then you can do a new one. So it just grabbed the edge of my plank and I tap it down and you see the plaster spreads on its own and you also notice hopefully little air bubbles coming to the surface. In this case, I used two different plaster layers.
So the first one is painted with just pure white plaster and the second one I poured in pink is a white plaster mixed with a little bit of a pigment into it. I checked it by tapping the mixture to see it doesnt stick and is completely dry.
So I push it down really well. So I noticed I just made a mess of tiny pieces of clay that were stuck on my cups. If you want more of a marble look with your pigment, then you can better add it afterwards. So can, you know, manipulate nature a little bit so that it goes in the direction that you want it to. So it actually isnt that hard to keep it between the lines. You just mix a new batch and thats gonna make it much easier to fill in all your details. Please note: DO NOT use your rolling pin that you use for edible items or in the kitchen. Every week a new project is crafted and shared. And with plaster, you want to clean up first. So think of what kind of surface you want to use underneath. 13. Plaster always sticks to plaster. So Ill grab one of those. Just make sure it has a front face that lies flat on the surface.
